This practical course gives management guidance for this fascinating subject . It contains techniical detail an dtips on sucessful egg handling , incubation, hygiene , nuttirtion , brooding and rearing for incubator and naturally hatched chicks . This course is carried out by Alison Colville-Hyde who has a wealth of experience with commercial and small scale poultry production

As well as learning all about the chickens , being able to handle them and seeing our set up here at Moon Ridge Farm , you will have the chance to wonder around the farm and maybe spot our wallabies and mara we have here . We have plenty of Chickens here so if you felt confident enough after your course which i am sure you will , you can take them home with you that day or reserve some for a future date for a small deposit . Chicken keeping for beginners covers the four key areas of chicken keeping, plus wether chickens are suitable for your circumstances:

  • Are chickens right for you?
  • Nutrition: feeding chickens
  • Housing: choosing the right home for your chickens
  • Handling: how to pick up and handle your chickens
  • Healthcare: how to identify and treat common health problems

This course combines structured learning with practical hands on experience: we bring chickens to demonstrate handling and health diagnosis. This course also includes coffee and cakes. Following the course we hold a question and answer session, and all participants will be provided with course notes in a folder.

As a bonus, course participants are also treated to home made cupcakes!

Course schedule

Chicken keeping for beginners is a 3 hour course, with the following sections:

10:00am: Introduction to chicken keeping

11:00am: Break with coffee and cakes

11:30am: Handling, heath and chicken wellbeing

12:30pm: Question and answer session (come armed with questions!)

13:00pm: Course finishes
