Akebia quinata is a stunning semi-evergreen, fast growing climber that originates from China, Korea and Japan. In the spring (April-May), maroon-chocolate coloured flowers are in bloom which give off a slight sweet scent. The flowers stand out beautifully against its bright green leaves that are composed of five rounded edged leaflets. The leaves can have a slight purple tinge during the winter months. The Chocolate Vine is great for training against a wall.
Often eaten fresh, the Akebia fruit is best after it fully opens naturally on the vine. The fruit contains a sweet soft pulp, eaten primarily in Japan as a seasonal delicacy. The rind, with a slight bitter taste, is used as vegetable, stuffed with ground meat and deep-fried. The seeds are very bitter and can even lead to throat irritation if chewed. They are discarded by spitting out or simply swallowing them whole. The fruit can be processed into jams, jellies, drinks and even added to smoothies or ice-creams.
Commonly used as an ornamental and edible plant in the United States and Europe. In its native habitat, it is often found on hills, in hedges, on trees, along forest edges and streams, and on mountainous slopes.
The Akebia are happy in full sun and partial shade. If in an exposed position they will lose their leaves in winter, but are hardy down to -15.
